Ottawa officeThe Québec government has been present in Ottawa since the appointment of its first representative in 1908. At the time, the appointee bore the title of Agent General and was mandated—and still is—to safeguard Québec’s interests. Activity sectorsIntergovernmental and institutional relations The Ottawa team is responsible for representing Québec in its relations with federal institutions, namely, the federal government, Parliament and the various federal agencies. The personnel of the office is in regular contact with the different political players such as ministers, MPs, senators and the personnel of ministers’ offices, and maintains relations with senior officials and members of the federal public service. The office informs Québec authorities of the various issues of concern to Canadian parliamentarians. It advises the Québec government on strategies to adopt and asserts Québec’s point of view. This institutional presence also extends to the other provinces and the territories present in the federal capital. The office maintains close ties with the representatives of these other governments. Communications and public affairs The office provides information and documentation on Québec to its Ottawa contacts: politicians, public servants, diplomats and reporters.
